So you’re staying at The Old Post Office in Geldeston, and are looking for a day out, maybe something which allows you to see some of the local wildlife – as well at taking in a local town for a cup of coffee. Well, I can recommend a good day out, and what’s more, you won’t even need to take the car.

The River Waveney at Beccles – where the Big Dog Ferry docks

The day out I’m talking about is a river trip to the nearby town of Beccles. First up, is a little walk – about 30 minutes or so from The Old Post Office – to the out of the way pub called “The Geldeston Locks”. From the Geldeston Locks you can take the “Big Dog ferry” into Beccles. The Big Dog Ferry works very much like a water based bus service, with scheduled runs from the Geldeston Locks to Beccles Lido about every 2 hours. This gentle journey along the River Waveney gives you plenty of opportunity to keep an eye out for the local wildlife – Red Kites, otters and Kingfishers are just a few of the inhabitants of this part of the Suffolk.

Arrival at Beccles Lido

Beccles Lido? Isn’t that a swimming pool? Yes it is! A 33 metre heated pool, Beccles Lido is a good stopping off point if you fancy a refreshing dip. Taking a swim at Beccles Lido isn’t compulsory though; just the arrival/departure point in Beccles for the Big Dog Ferry, and only 2 minutes from the centre of Beccles.

After you’ve disembarked from the Big Dog Ferry, head up the hill, and turn left onto Puddingmoor. After about 50 metres, you’ll find a set of steps on your right which will take you past St Michael's Church, and you will find yourself in the centre of Beccles.

Follow the steps from Puddingmoor, past St Michael's Church, into Beccles town centre

At the start I promised you a coffee. I’m not planning on sending you to a Costa Coffee or a Starbucks; nothing but Beccles’ best is needed, so “Twyfords” should be your destination. Twyfords is a classy independent coffee shop located in the centre of Beccles, so the ideal place to enjoy a hot beverage and slice of cake before seeing what else Beccles has to offer you.

You can return to The Old Post Office using the same route as you arrived. Or, alternatively, if you’re wearing comfortable shoes, you could always walk the 5 miles back to your holiday cottage.

This idea of a day out is brought to you by John Ellis. You can see other ideas for a day out at our family blog. Or should you have any questions on the Geldeston Locks - Big Dog Ferry – Beccles Lido day out, send me an email to
